Swimming Holes & Water Adventures Near Helen, GA

Summer in the North Georgia mountains is hard to beat, especially when you can cool off in a mountain stream, swim beneath a waterfall, or spend a lazy afternoon floating the Chattahoochee River. We've put together some of our favorite water adventures within about an hour of Helen, ranging from natural swimming holes and waterfall pools to the family-friendly beach at Unicoi Lake.

These aren't all the same experience—and that's intentional. Some require a hike and are best suited for active families, while others are easy to reach and better for younger children or a relaxed afternoon. We've included our honest recommendations, practical tips, and a few "know before you go" notes so you can choose the experience that's right for your group.

Dicks Creek Falls—also commonly called Waters Creek Falls—is a very different experience from Blue Hole Falls. Rather than committing to a substantial hike, you can reach this small series of cascades and pools with very little walking. That makes it an appealing option when your group wants to spend time in the water without dedicating half the day to a trail.

The tradeoff is that this is a much more rustic destination. There isn't the infrastructure or polished visitor experience you'll find at Unicoi State Park, and the rocks around moving water can be slippery. We'd recommend it for families with older children and guests comfortable supervising themselves around natural mountain water—not necessarily for families looking for a controlled swimming environment.

Haven Haus Tip: After significant rain, check conditions before heading out. Mountain streams can change quickly, and the rocks around the falls deserve considerably more respect than their easy access might suggest.

Not every swimming day needs to involve hiking down a mountain. Unicoi Lake Beach gives Haven Haus guests a much easier option just minutes from the cabin. The spring-fed mountain lake has a designated swimming beach, making it a particularly good choice for families with younger children or anyone who wants a straightforward day by the water. 

It's also part of a much larger state park experience. Guests can combine swimming with the lake trail, fishing, hiking, dining, or simply relaxing around the park. The beach is seasonal and weather-dependent, and there are no guaranteed lifeguards, so normal supervision is still important. 

Haven Haus Tip: If your group includes both swimmers and non-swimmers, Unicoi is one of our easiest recommendations because everyone can find something to enjoy without committing to a strenuous hike.

Tubing the Chattahoochee is probably the most accessible water adventure in Helen. Instead of hiking to a remote waterfall, you can spend a summer afternoon floating through the river that runs directly through the Alpine village. It's particularly well suited to larger groups because everyone can participate at their own pace while enjoying the scenery around Helen.

This is also one of those activities where expectations matter. The Chattahoochee isn't a perfectly smooth lazy river; water levels affect the experience, and shallow sections can mean bumping or getting briefly hung up on rocks. Current operators provide tubes, shuttle transportation and life jackets as appropriate, and trips generally take around 2–2.5 hours depending on conditions and how often groups stop.
